Statement by the President on the authorization of a referendum

“Tonight the Executive Board, with input from chapter presidents, adopted a resolution directing me to call a referendum regarding the Texas College Democrats’ affiliation with the College Democrats of America. I intend to discharge this directive.

“On Monday, November 29, a special meeting of the Federation Council will be called to order, marking the beginning of a three-day referendum. On behalf of their chapters, chapter presidents will be asked to vote on whether or not the Bylaws of the Federation be amended to disaffiliate the Federation from the national organization. A two-thirds majority in the affirmative of chapter presidents voting is necessary for such an amendment to be adopted. My senior leadership team and I will be working diligently these next few days to make sure that each chapter president feels that they are able to make an informed decision.

“Let me be clear: this referendum is solely about giving our chapters a long overdue choice about the direction and future of their statewide organization. It is about fulfilling my promise to put our chapters and members first. And, it is about being the Federation we know we can be in all things. I fully intend to accept and respect the results of that choice.

“Our Federation is the best college Democrats organization in the nation, and we will continue to be. We will continue to lead with our values and with respect for one another as fellow Texans and as human beings. And we will continue to show this state and this country what it means to believe in a better tomorrow and how to work for it.”
